50's 'A' continue their winning ways...

The Over 50s "A" continued their unbeaten run against Wiltshire at sunny Malmesbury CC on Thursday. Following a very similar theme to the home game v Wiltshire 2 weeks ago; the Glos team arrived in dribs and drabs and by 1255 (1300 start), we were still 3 players down including batsmen 2 & 3 (Rob Sharp and Robbo)! The missing players eventually arrived at 1257 (Rob) and 1259 (Robbo and Gary). Apparently Gary has previous form for arriving late and certainly didn't seem in a rush! Anyway, Tim won the toss for the first time this season and elected to bat. Rob immediately regained his composure to open the innings with guest international Danny. Both were dropped early on but they gave us a solid start putting on 121 for the 1st wicket off 29 overs before Rob was out LBW for 55. Robbo came and went for a quick 10, then skipper Tim Smith came in smashing 31 off 15 balls, including 2 6s and 4 4s, before being unluckily run out by a direct throw from the boundary. We then finished the innings by scoring 110 runs off the last 10 overs, in the main thanks to a superb 135 not out off 148 balls, by international Danny Boy; and a quick 15 off 12 balls at the death by Gary. True to form Danny was seen querying a leg bye with the umpire after a thin inside edge when his score was on 123 in the 41st over! The non-batsman made their own entertainment during Danny's knock; and as the photo suggests, Gary and Phil took team spirit to a new level! The incident was disguised as a physIo session but Celia appeared unperturbed by her husbands behaviour and continued to watch the cricket without a second glance!

The Wiltshire reply got off to a slow start of 34-1 off 12 overs thanks to the opening bowling partnership of Steve Bridge (1-21 off 6) and Phil Edge (0-13 off 6). The wicket was Steve Bridge's first for the Seniors, caught in the covers at the 4th attempt by Tim! The crowd (and players!) were heard singing the juggling tune (da da da dada'll da da da da da etc!). Wickets then fell at regular intervals and Wiltshire were never in the hunt eventually bowled out for 109 in the 40th over. Everyone bowled well; Phil Brown 3-22 off 9, Mark Moodie 1-16 off 7, Rob Austen 2-26 off 5.4 and Rob Gaffney 2-8 off 4 including 4 wides! "Safe Hands" Robbo kept well, taking numerous blows to his athletic body, going through the pain barrier at regular intervals for the team! His only black mark (apart from the bruises to aforementioned athletic body!), came in the dying overs as he impersonated an Italian footballer when the ball hit him in the chest; only for Robbo to hold his face in apparent agony! Nice acting Robbo!

Another good win as we continue our march towards the semi final play offs. Four games remaining, probably needing 2 more wins to qualify; Wales away next week is likely to be our toughest test yet. Although not the most exciting game, a win is a win and once again team spirit was evident with plenty of banter between the players (most of which was aimed at Danny or Robbo!). Thanks to Eileen for scoring, John for umpiring, and once again to our small band of loyal supporters; with Team Manager Len also casting a watchful eye over the team on this occasion. Bring on Wales next week!

Cmon the Glos!
